Causes of TMJ/TMD
There are several potential causes of TMJ. Trauma to the head, neck, or jaw area can lead to problems. It can also be caused by clenching or grinding your teeth. Malocclusion (meaning “bad bite”) is another possible culprit. Your teeth are meant to fit neatly together, but poor alignment can lead to unwanted stress on the temporomandibular joint (the joint connecting the jawbone to the skull).
If you experience the following symptoms, you might be suffering from TMJ:
- Headaches and migraines
- Difficulty chewing/biting
- Popping sound when opening or closing mouth
- Tooth pain
- Radiating pain in neck, jaw and face
- Jaw muscle stiffness
